Global Space Development Trajectories and the Future Outlook of Korea's Space Industry

세계 우주개발 동향과 한국 우주산업 현재와 미래

On Friday, September 27th, the Graduate School of International Studies held a special lecture titled "Global Space Development Trajectories and the Future Outlook of Korea's Space Industry "in Room 703 of Building 301. The event was organized by Professor Junho Lee from the Department of Translation and Interpertation, with Jeon Woo-bin, a graduate student in the Korean-English translation program, serving as the moderator.

9월 27일(금) 국제대학원 리더스 포럼 특강 "세계 우주개발 동향과 한국 우주산업 현재와 미래"가 중앙문화예술관 301관 703호에서 개최되었다. 이번 특강은 이준호 전문통번역학과 한·영 전공 교수의 주관으로 개최되었으며 전우빈 전문통번역학과 한·영 전공 원우가 특강 사회를 맡았다.

The guest speaker, Park Si-su, began his career as a journalist at the Korea Times and now works as the Asia correspondent for SpaceNews, a leading U.S. media outlet focused on the space industry. In addition, he is a board member at the Global Aerospace Industry Society and the head of Space Radar, the only space information forum in Korea. The lecture touched on several key topics, including Space X, the rising strategic value of space in national defense and security, government and military-driven growth in demand, and the increasing complexity of orbital activities. The session ended with a Q&A session.

박시수 연사는 영자신문사 The Korea Times에서 기자로 시작해 현재는 미국 우주산업 전문매체인 SpcaeNews에서 아시아 특파원으로 활동하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 글로벌항공우주산업학회 이사 겸 대한민국 유일 우주정보포럼 스페이스레이더의 대표로서 활약하고 있다. 본 특강은 ▲스페이스 X ▲우주의 안보적 가치 증가 ▲정부·군 주도하는 수요 ▲궤도의 혼합도 증가 및 ▲질의응답 시간 순으로 진행됐다.

The lecture started by spotlighting Space X, the global frontrunner in private sector space travel and the only company with reusable rockets, before delving into their fast-paced rocket development initiatives.

강의는 현재 전세계 유일 재사용 로켓을 보유한 우주산업 최고의 선도기업 스페이스 X를 조명하며 시작했다. 특히 기업이 빠른 속도로 진행하고 있는 로켓개발사업을 중점적으로 살펴보았다.

The speaker discussed the rising strategic importance of space in national security, citing the Russia-Ukraine war. He pointed out how satellite imagery has been strategically used during the conflict and how this has raised awareness of the importance of space assets in national defense. He predicted that this will lead to increased space-related investment by governments.

우주의 안보적 가치 증가에 대해서는 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁을 사례로 들며 인공위성사진이 전쟁에서 전략적으로 활용됨에 따라 우주 자산의 안보적 가치 인식이 향상되었음을 강조했다. 이에 따른 국가 단위의 우주 투자가 증가할 것이라고 전망하였다.

As for the demand driven by the government and military, he drew attention to how increasing investment in the space industry by these entities is fostering the growth of companies, products, services, and technologies related to national security.

정부·군 주도하는 수요에 대해서는 정부와 군이 우주산업에 대한 투자가 늘어남에 따라 국가안보 관련기업, 제품, 수요, 서비스, 기술이 성장하고 있음을 조명했다.

He also addressed the issue of space debris, now being found everywhere, seeing it as a sign of the increasing complexity in orbital activities. Efforts are focused on creating regulations and advancing technology to mitigate this issue.

이어서 우주쓰레기가 국경을 가리지 않고 발견되고 있는 현상을 가리키며 궤도의 혼합도 증가를 강조했다. 이에 대해 현재 우주쓰레기 문제를 해결하기 위한 제도적 규제와 기술적 노력을 하고 있다고 전했다.

During the Q&A session, attendees asked questions about the future of the space industry. Park noted that, given the global nature of the field, strong language skills are a competitive edge. He added that with countries like the U.S., China, and Russia being major players in the space industry, students from the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation have considerable potential in this area.

질의응답 시간에는 우주산업 전망에 대한 질문이 이어졌다. 연사는 분야 자체가 글로벌한만큼 언어적 능력이 큰 강점이 될 수 있다고 했다. 특히 미국·중국·러시아가 우주산업 강국이기 때문에 해당 분야에서 국제대학원 전문통번역학과 학생들의 잠재력이 매우 높을 것이라고 말했다.

Second-year students from the Translation and Interpretation Department, specializing in Korean-English, supported the lecture by providing simultaneous interpretation.

한편, 이번 특강은 전문통번역학과 한·영 2학년 재학생이 동시통역을 지원했다.
