The Power of Harmony, Hansik

On October 30 (Friday) at 3 p.m., a special lecture was held in Room 703 of Building 301, featuring Yoon-joo Han, CEO of Congdu, under the theme “The Power of Harmony, Hansik.” The lecture was organized by Professor Jun-ho Lee of the Korean-English Program and attended by approximately 40 second-year AITP students.

In 2002, Han opened Congdu, a modern Korean restaurant that creatively reinterprets jang, traditional Korean fermented sauces and pastes that form the foundation of Korean cuisine. Since then, she has played a leading role in promoting the value of Korean cuisine worldwide by planning and organizing various international events, including state banquets at the Blue House and VIP events. Drawing on her extensive experience in planning and preparing Korean culinary events, Han talked about strategies for globalizing Korean cuisine by highlighting its unique values and cultural heritage.

In the first part of the lecture, Han shared practical insights into planning Korean culinary events based on her hands-on experience. She explained that event organizers must first clearly identify the purpose of an event and design the menu accordingly. She emphasized that Korean culinary events are not simply occasions to introduce food, but opportunities to showcase well-thought-out menus that reflect the healthy image of Korean cuisine, Korea’s culture and history, diplomatic relations with other countries, and contemporary trends. In particular, she stressed the importance of carefully considering the dietary cultures and needs of different groups in the guest country, including restrictions and preferences related to alcohol, gluten, and vegan diets.

In the second part of the lecture, Han shared firsthand accounts of planning banquets for major international events. Drawing on examples from the Davos Forum and Milan Expo, she explained how these events provided opportunities to showcase the global competitiveness of Korean culinary content and effectively convey the messages behind each event. She also shared examples of her creative and thoughtful approach to event planning, such as developing menus tailored to local tastes, including kimchi chips made from washed and aged kimchi, and incorporating traditional Korean bamboo tableware and utensils to promote environmentally friendly practices.

During the Q&A session that followed, the role and responsibilities of interpreters were covered in promoting Korean cuisine and culture internationally. Han pointed to cases in which dosirak, a traditional Korean packed meal, is interpreted as the Japanese term bento. She emphasized the importance of accurately understanding cultural differences between countries, even within Asia, and choosing terminology that reflects those distinctions. She advised interpreters to go beyond simply conveying language and take responsibility for accurately communicating the uniqueness and identity of Korean culture.

Meanwhile, students from the Korean-English, Korean-Chinese, and Korean-Russian Programs of AITP provided simultaneous interpretation in their respective languages.
