Nurture Wins: From Interpreter to Financial Expert

Nurture Wins, 통역사에서 금융전문가가 되기까지

On September 11 (Friday) at 3 p.m., the AITP held a special lecture in Room 703 of Building 301, featuring Choi Seung-rak, Chief Customer Officer (CCO) of Toss Bank, under the theme "Nurture Wins." The lecture was organized by Professor Lee Jun-ho of the Korean-English Program and drew approximately 40 second-year AITP students.

지난 9월 11일 (금) 오후 3시, 301관 703호에서 토스뱅크의 최승락 CCO를 초청해 ‘Nurture wins, 노력이 이긴다’를 주제로 특별 강연을 열었다. 이번 특강은 한·영 전공 이준호 교수님의 주관으로 개최되었으며, 전문통번역학과 2학년생 약 40명이 참여하였다.

After graduating from the Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation, speaker Choi Seung-rak went on to work at Standard Chartered Bank, where he led several operations across financial markets in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa while working between Singapore, Hong Kong, and Seoul. He currently heads financial consumer protection at Toss Bank.

최승락 연사는 통번역대학원 졸업 후 스탠다드차타드에서 근무하며 싱가포르, 홍콩, 서울을 오가는 등 아시아, 중동, 아프리카 등 다수의 금융시장을 이끌었다. 현재는 토스뱅크에서 금융소비자 보호 총괄을 맡고 있다.

The lecture centered on three main themes: transitioning into a career in finance, interpretation, translation, and communication skills, and an introduction to retail banking. Choi's core value, "Nurture wins," recurred throughout the talk. He explained that the constant training and mindset required of a professional interpreter, along with sharp reading and listening comprehension skills gained through that process, made his career possible.

이번 강연은 ▲금융업계로의 커리어 변환 ▲통번역 및 커뮤니케이션 역량 ▲리테일 뱅킹 업무 소개를 중심으로 진행되었다. 연사의 핵심 가치관인 “Nurture wins”는 강연 전반에 걸쳐 반복해서 강조되었다. 최승락 연사는 끊임없이 공부하는 통역사의 훈련 과정과 태도, 그리고 이를 통해 획득한 읽기 및 경청의 기술이 커리어 전환에도 큰 도움이 되었다고 설명했다.

He went on to give an overview of the bank's key functional areas — finance, risk, products, controls, and technology — along with insights into the kinds of interpretation services the financial industry requires and the skills expected of interpreters working in finance, offering practical guidance for graduate students in interpretation and translation. During the Q&A session that followed, students asked a wide range of questions about topics such as the career transition process, the changes AI may bring, how to take feedback well, and the importance of resilience. The speaker drew on his own experience to offer thoughtful advice.

이어 은행의 주요 업무 영역인 재무, 리스크, 상품, 통제, 기술에 대한 개괄적 설명과 함께 금융업계에서 필요로 하는 통역 서비스, 금융권 통역사에게 요구되는 업무 역량 등을 소개하여 통번역대학원 학생들에게 실질적인 도움을 주었다. 강연 후 이어진 질의응답 시간에는 커리어 전환 과정, AI가 가져올 변화, 피드백 수용의 태도, 회복탄력성의 중요성 등에 대한 다양한 질문이 오갔고 연사는 자신의 경험을 바탕으로 학생들에게 깊이 있는 조언을 전했다.

The lecture also featured live simultaneous interpretation provided by second-year students from the Korean-English, Korean-Chinese, and Korean-Russian Programs in their respective language pairs.

한편 이번 특강에서는 전문통번역학과 한·영, 한·중, 한·러 2학년 재학생들이 전공언어로 동시통역을 지원했다.
