The Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) hosted a special lecture titled “Beyond the Medium: Shaping Trend-Driven Content” with Jung-Yoon Han, CEO of Trulight Korea, on Friday, December 12, at 3:00 p.m. in Room 703 of Building 301. The lecture was organized by Professor Qi-meng Wang of the Korean–Chinese Department of the AITP. Approximately 50 second-year students from the AITP attended the event, and Professor Hye-Jin Jun of the Korean–Russian Department also joined the session.

국제대학원 12월 12일(금) 오후 3시, 301관 703호에서 트루라이트코리아 한정윤 대표를 초청해 “Medium을 넘어 Hip content로 만들어 가는 세계”를 주제로 특강을 개최했다. 이번 특강은 전문통번역학과 한·중 전공 왕기맹 교수의 주관으로 진행되었으며, 전문통번역학과 2학년생 약 50명이 참석했다. 또한 전문통번역학과 한·러 전공 전혜진 교수도 함께해 자리를 빛냈다.

CEO Han previously worked at Kakao and Kakao Entertainment, where she was responsible for webtoon IP screen adaptations and overseas strategy. She has since continued to develop a global content business focused on the localization of webtoons and web novels, as well as platform operations.

한정윤 대표는 카카오 및 카카오엔터테인먼트에서 웹툰 IP 영상화와 해외 전략 업무를 담당한 바 있으며, 이후 웹툰·웹소설 현지화와 플랫폼 운영을 중심으로 한 글로벌 콘텐츠 사업을 이어오고 있다.

During the lecture, she discussed the growth potential of the global webtoon market while addressing structural challenges facing the industry, including declining revenues and recent market contraction. In response to these challenges, she emphasized the importance of IP-based expansion strategies rather than reliance on a single platform or specific medium. She illustrated the scalability of IP through examples of webtoons expanding into web novels, dramas, films, music, and picture books. In this context, localization was highlighted as a core element that goes beyond simple linguistic translation, requiring sensitivity to cultural context and emotional nuance, and as a prerequisite for successful IP expansion.

강연에서는 글로벌 웹툰 시장의 성장 가능성과 함께, 최근 매출 감소와 시장 위축 등 산업 전반의 구조적 어려움이 소개됐다. 이에 따라 단일 플랫폼이나 특정 미디어에 의존하기보다, IP를 중심으로 한 확장 전략의 필요성도 강조했다. 이어 연사는 웹툰이 웹소설, 드라마, 영화, 음악, 그림책 등 다양한 미디어로 확장되는 사례를 통해 IP의 확장성을 설명했다. 이 과정에서 현지화는 단순한 언어 번역을 넘어 문화적 맥락과 정서를 반영하는 핵심 요소로, IP 확장의 전제 조건이라는 점이 언급됐다.

Drawing on her company’s experience, the speaker introduced the structure of the localization businesses encompassing translation, editing, and global distribution of webtoons and web novels. She further explained the importance of localization capabilities throughout the IP utilization process, including secondary and tertiary adaptations such as web novel-to-webtoon and webtoon-to-screen productions.

또한 자사 사례를 바탕으로 웹툰·웹소설의 번역과 편집, 글로벌 유통을 아우르는 현지화 사업 구조를 소개했다. 웹소설의 웹툰화와 웹툰의 영상화 등 2차·3차 저작물로 이어지는 IP 활용 과정에서 현지화 역량의 중요성도 함께 설명했다.

Unlike conventional lecture-centered formats, the session naturally transitioned into a Q&A session in the latter part of the first session. During the discussion, participants asked about the role of translators and interpreters in the content localization industry, genre-specific translation competencies, and the linguistic and cultural expertise required for entering global markets.

이번 특강은 기존의 강연 중심 형식과 달리 1세션 후반부부터 질의응답이 자연스럽게 이어지며 진행됐다. 질의응답 시간에는 콘텐츠 현지화 분야에서의 통번역사의 역할, 장르별 번역 역량, 글로벌 시장 진출 과정에서 요구되는 언어 및 문화 이해 등에 대한 질문이 이어졌다.

In her responses, the speaker explained that a key differentiating factor in localization lies in a deep understanding of and genuine passion for the content itself. She noted that for highly genre-driven content such as fantasy, games, and webtoons, translation quality depends not only on language proficiency but also on familiarity with the original IP and genre conventions. As for the use of AI technologies, she acknowledged that machine translation can serve as a supplementary tool, while stressing that the final delivery of emotion and cultural judgment remains a fundamentally human role.

연사는 질의응답을 통해 현지화 분야에서의 차별화 요소로 콘텐츠에 대한 이해와 애정을 강조했다. 특히 판타지, 게임, 웹툰 등 장르성이 강한 콘텐츠의 경우, 언어 능력뿐 아니라 원작 IP와 장르 문법에 대한 이해가 번역의 완성도를 좌우한다고 설명했다. 또한 AI 기술의 활용과 관련해 자동 번역은 보조 수단으로 활용될 수 있으나, 최종적인 감정 전달과 문화적 판단은 여전히 사람의 역할이 중요하다는 점을 덧붙였다.

Meanwhile, second-year AITP students supported the event by providing simultaneous interpreting in Korean–English, Korean–Chinese, and Korean–Russian, each in their respective major languages.

한편, 이번 특강에서는 전문통번역학과 2학년 재학생들이 각자의 전공언어로 한·영, 한·중, 한·러 동시통역을 맡아 행사를 지원했다.
