GSIS Lecturer Li Xue Mei Participates in Shanghai Publication Event as Translator of the Chinese Edition of The Most Ordinary Drama

An essay titled “The Most Ordinary Drama,” which exposed the harsh realities of labor conditions in the Korean broadcasting industry and examines structural problems on production sites in depth, was published in Chinese in November 2025. The Chinese edtion was translated by Li Xue Mei, a lecturer at the Graduate School International Studies (GSIS). She was invited to Shanghai to take part in a publication event celebrating the release of the book.

한국 방송노동의 열악한 현실을 고발하며 제작 현장의 구조적 문제를 심층적으로 다룬 에세이 『가장 보통의 드라마』가 지난 2025년 11월 중국에서 중국어판으로 출간되었다. 이번 번역 작업을 맡은 이는 바로 우리 대학의 이설매 강사로, 출간을 기념해 중국 상하이에서 열린 대담 행사에 초청받았다.

The publication event took the form of an open dialogue between the translator and a panel of Chinese media professionals. Participants compared labor issues in the drama production industries of both Korean and China and engaged in a wide range of discussions on directions for improvement to ensure the sustainability of the content industry. In particular, they paid attention to the translator’s role in accurately and persuasively conveying the original Korean work’s messages into Chinese.

출판 기념회는 역자와 중국 현지 미디어 종사자 패널 간의 공개 대담 형식으로 진행되었으며, 한국과 중국 드라마 제작 현장의 노동 문제를 비교하며 콘텐츠 산업의 지속가능성을 위한 개선 방향에 대해 폭넓은 논의를 나누었다. 특히, 현장의 목소리를 생생하게 담아낸 한국 원작의 메시지를 정확하고도 설득력 있는 중국어로 전달한 역자의 역할이 크게 조명되었다.

Local panelists praised the translation, noting that it went beyond a simple linguistic transfer and served as a bridge that enabled Chinese readers to gain a deeper understanding of the realities of labor in the Korean broadcasting industry. Readers also responded positively in online bookstore reviews, commenting that the book’s sense of social awareness was vividly conveyed through the translation, transcending differences in cultural and industrial contexts.

현지 패널들은 “번역이 단순한 언어 전환을 넘어, 한국 방송노동의 현실을 중국 독자들이 깊이 이해할 수 있도록 하는 다리 역할을 했다”며 번역 완성도를 높이 평가했다. 독자들 또한 중국 온라인 서점 리뷰에서 “문화와 산업 환경의 차이를 뛰어넘는 강렬한 문제의식이 번역을 통해 생생하게 전달되었다”고 호평을 남겼다.

This publication marks a meaningful achievement that highlights the contribution of a GSIS faculty member to the international publishing community. It also demonstrates how academic expertise can translate into broader social value.

이번 출간은 우리 대학 구성원이 국제적 출판계에서 중요한 역할을 수행했음을 보여준 뜻깊은 성과이며, 동시에 학문적 역량이 사회적 가치 창출로 이어질 수 있음을 증명한 사례로 평가된다.
