미디어를 활용한 국제업무 역량 키우기

The Graduate School of International Studies held a special lecture on strengthening global competence through media with Yong-sung Lee, Internation Affairs Reporter at Economy Chosun on Friday, October 10, at 3 p.m. in Room 703 of Building 301. The lecture was organized by Professor Lee Jun-ho of the Korean-English department and was attended by about 50 second-year students from AITP.

국제대학원은 지난 10월 10일(금) 오후 3시, 301관 703호에서 이코노미조선의 이용성 국제전문기자를 초청해 ‘미디어를 활용한 국제 업무 역량 강화’를 주제로 특별 강연을 개최했다. 이번 강연은 한·영 전공 이준호 교수님의 주관으로 개최되었으며 전문통번역학과 재학생 약 50명이 참석했다.

The guest speaker, Mr. Yong-sung Lee, International Affairs Reporter at Economy Chosun, previously served as Head of the International Desk at Chosun Biz and as a reporter for The Korea Times and The Korea Herald. He holds an M.A. in Journalism from Cardiff University, U.K. and is an expert in global news coverage.

이용성 기자는 전 조선비즈 국제부장, 코리아타임스 및 코리아헤럴드 취재기자를 거쳐 현재 이코노미조선에서 국제 이슈를 담당하고 있으며, 영국 카디프대학교에서 저널리즘 석사 학위를 취득한 국제보도 전문가다.

Mr. Lee opened his lecture saying, “You can only stay ahead by keeping your hands busy,” to preface a list of practical strategies to build a broad in today’s rapidly changing media landscape. He said that “the key to a successful interview lies in the quality of questions,” highlighting that good questioning begins with effective searching and the ability to identify credible sources. He further explained three essential steps in information search including combining diverse keywords to piece together information, verifying the reliability of sources, and rereading materials with a critical mindset.

강연에서 그는 “손이 부지런해야 정보에 앞설 수 있다”는 말로 시작하며 빠르게 변화하는 미디어 환경 속에서 국제 감각을 키우기 위한 구체적인 방법을 제시했다. 그는 “좋은 인터뷰의 성패는 결국 질문에 달려 있다”며 “질문을 잘하려면 검색에 능하고, 신뢰할 수 있는 소스를 식별할 줄 알아야 한다”고 강조했다. 이어 ▲다양한 키워드 조합으로 ‘정보의 퍼즐’을 맞춰가기 ▲출처의 신뢰도를 검증하기 ▲비판적으로 읽고 의문점을 정리해 다시 찾아보기 등 정보 탐색의 핵심 단계를 소개했다.

Mr. Lee described AI as “a double-edged sword,” illustrating how overreliance on automatic translation could lead to a contextual distortion. He emphasized the importance of maintaining critical thinking when utilizing technology.

AI 활용에 대해서는 “AI는 양날의 검”이라고 지적하며 자동 번역의 단어 선택 불일치와 문맥 오류 사례를 소개했다. 그는 “기술은 유용하지만 비판적 사고 없이 의존하면 오히려 정보를 왜곡할 수 있다”고 경고했다.

He also advised students to actively follow global and local media on social platforms, organize valuable articles using archive tools, and manage algorithms deliberately to broaden their perspectives.

또한 소셜미디어를 통한 국제 감각 형성 습관을 제시했다. 해외 주요 언론과 현지 매체를 팔로우하고 유용한 기사는 개인 저장 기능을 활용해 정리해두며 알고리즘을 주도적으로 관리해야 한다고 조언했다.

Concluding the lecture, Mr. Lee remarked, “The world is closely interconnected. English is essential, but mastering additional languages enhances competitiveness. True global competence comes from understanding how international issues affect both Korean society and your own work.”

끝으로 그는 “세계는 긴밀히 연결되어 있다”며 “영어는 기본이고 다른 외국어를 습득해야만 자신의 경쟁력을 높일 수 있으며 해외 이슈가 한국 사회와 자신의 일에 미치는 영향을 분석해야만 전략적 시각이 형성된다”고 조언했다.

During the Q&A session, he underscored the importance of communication skills and preparedness for interviews and outreach activities, noting that “in global affairs, critical thinking and the power of questioning outweigh language skills.”

질의응답 시간에는 통번역대학원생으로서 향후 인터뷰·섭외 활동 시 필요한 준비 태도와 커뮤니케이션 역량의 중요성을 강조하며, “국제 업무에서는 언어 능력보다 사고력과 질문력이 진짜 경쟁력”이라고 말했다.

Meanwhile, simultaneous interpretation was provided in Korean-English, Korean-Chines, and Korean-Russian by students from AITP.

한편, 이번 특강에서는 전문통번역학과 한·영, 한·중, 한·러 전공 재학생들이 전공 언어로 동시통역을 지원했다.
