Q1. 최근 통번역 분야에서는 번역 기술의 활용 능력이 점점 더 중요해지고 있는데요, 중앙대학교 통번역학과(AITP)는 이를 위해 어떤 준비를 하고 있나요?

A. 중앙대 AITP는 통번역 분야에서의 첨단 기술 활용이 앞으로 중요한 화두로 떠오를 것으로 일찍이 예견하고 이에 대비하여 2018년부터 기술 융합 통번역 교과목을 개설하고 이를 뒷받침할 교육 인프라와 교강사진 확보에 힘써왔습니다. 번역 생산성과 용어 관리의 효율을 높이는 다양한 컴퓨터 보조 번역 소프트웨어(CAT), 특히 Trados Studio의 활용법을 심화 실습 과정을 통해 익히고 그 과정에서 번역 메모리와 용어집의 작동 프로세스를 자연스럽게 체화하도록 합니다. 2025년에는 최신 버전인 Trados Studio 2024로 업그레이드하여 구글 번역 등의 신경망 기술과 ChatGPT 등의 생성형 AI 번역 기능에 대한 실시간 액세스를 통해 포스트에디팅과 같은 ‘인간-기계 협업 번역’ 실습에서의 효율을 대폭 높였습니다.

Q1. In the field of translation and interpretation, the ability to utilize translation technology is becoming increasingly important. What preparations is the Advanced Interpretation and Translation Program (AITP) at Chung-Ang University making in response to this trend?

A. The AITP at Chung-Ang University foresaw that the use of advanced technology in the field of translation and interpretation would become an important issue in the future, and in preparation for this, it has been offering technology-integrated translation and interpretation courses since 2018 and has been working hard to secure the educational infrastructure and faculty to support these courses. Students learn to use various computer-assisted translation (CAT) software, particularly Trados Studio, through in-depth practical training to enhance translation productivity and terminology management efficiency. Through this process, they naturally internalize the operational processes of translation memory and terminology databases. In 2025, we upgraded to the latest version, Trados Studio 2024, to significantly enhance efficiency in “human-machine collaborative translation” exercises such as post-editing by providing real-time access to neural network technologies like Google Translate and generative AI translation features like ChatGPT.

Q2. 교수님께서는 공학 박사로서 기술적 전문성과 번역 교육을 접목하고 계신데요, 앞으로 기술과의 공존을 위해 어떤 마음가짐으로, 어떤 노력을 해야 할까요?

A. 공학자와 번역가는 무엇이 다를까? 가끔 생각해 보는데요, 공학자는 수학, 물리 등의 기술 기반 언어로 문제를 해결하는 반면, 번역가는 자연어, 즉 인간 언어를 중심으로 의사소통에 기여하죠. 공통점은 양측 다 정확성과 정밀성에 집착하고 논리적 사고를 중요시한다는 점이겠네요. 그 기저에는 아마도 직업 윤리에 따른 엄중한 책임감이 자리 잡고 있겠죠. 제가 번역을 사랑하는 이유이기도 합니다. 이런 관점에서 전문 번역 영역에서의 기계 번역을 논한다면 ‘나쁘진 않지만, 썩 좋지도 않다’ 정도로 평할 것 같네요. 할루시네이션도 계속 문제가 되고 있고요. 기술을 적극 수용하되 머리는 차갑게! 무엇보다 단순히 문장을 바꾸는 역할을 넘어, 숨은 의미를 해석하고, 의도와 맥락을 파악하고, 문화적 뉘앙스까지 조율하는 창조적 전문가로 자리매김해야겠죠.

Q2. As a professor with a doctorate in engineering, you combine technical expertise with translation education. What mindset and efforts are needed to coexist with technology in the future?

A. What is the difference between an engineer and a translator? I often ask myself this question. Engineers solve problems using technical languages such as mathematics and physics, while translators contribute to communication using natural languages, or, human languages. The commonality between the two is that both sides focus on accuracy and precision and value logical thinking. Underlying this is probably a sense of strict responsibility based on professional ethics. This is also why I love translation. From this perspective, when discussing machine translation in the field of professional translation, I would say it’s “not bad, but not great either.” Hallucinations continue to be an issue as well. We should actively embrace technology, but stay cool-headed! Above all, we must position ourselves as creative professionals who go beyond simply changing sentences to interpret hidden meanings, understand intentions and contexts, and even adjust cultural nuances.

Q3. 교수님이 생각하시는 중앙대학교 AITP의 강점은 무엇인가요?

A. 한발 앞서가는 융합형 커리큘럼과 교육 친화적 인프라, 관대한 장학 제도 등 소위 하드파워적 요소에 관해서는 더 강조하지 않아도 되겠죠? 소프트파워적 강점에 대해 말씀드려볼게요. 겉으로는 잘 드러나지 않을지 몰라도, 교육의 성패를 가를 수 있는 정말 중요한 부분이죠. 중앙대 AITP는 ‘사람’에 집중합니다. 빠르게 발전하는 기술과의 공존을 꾀하며 변화와 혁신에 박차를 가하는 와중에도 그 중심에는 항상 ‘사람’, 우리 학생들이 있습니다. 어떻게 하면 그들이 더 나은 환경에서 더 효과적으로 공부와 훈련에 몰입할 수 있을지, 변화하는 기술 지형에 발맞춰 나갈 수 있을지, 졸업 후 안정적으로 자신의 길을 찾아나갈 수 있을지, 매일 같이 고민하고 궁리하고 소통합니다. 우리 학생 한명 한명이 모두 AITP의 가장 소중한 자산이니까요!

Q3. What do you think are the strengths of Chung-Ang University AITP?

A. I do not need to emphasize the so-called hard power elements, such as the cutting-edge integrated curriculum, education-friendly infrastructure, and generous scholarship system, right? Let me talk about the soft power strengths. Though they may not be immediately apparent, these are truly crucial aspects that can determine the success or failure of education. Chung-Ang University AITP focuses on “people.” Even as we strive to coexist with rapidly advancing technology and accelerate change and innovation, at the core of it all are always “people”—our students. We constantly ponder, strategize, and communicate about how to help them study and train more effectively in a better environment, keep pace with the evolving technological landscape, and confidently chart their own paths after graduation. Each and every one of our students is the most valuable asset of AITP!

Q4. 2026학년도 입시 방식이 바뀐다고 들었는데, 간단하게 설명해 주실 수 있을까요?

A. 네 맞습니다. 중앙대 AITP에 지원하실 여러분의 편의를 위해 기존 1차와 2차로 나누어 진행되던 전형을 올해 입시부터 하루로 통합하고, 전형 당일에도 대기 시간을 최대로 줄이는 방향으로 전형 프로세스를 변경하고자 합니다. 변경된 전형 방식과 시험에 대한 상세한 설명은 오는 7월 12일에 열릴 중앙대 AITP 입시 설명회에서 들으실 수 있습니다. 가능하면 오프라인으로 참석해서 캠퍼스 투어도 하고 교강사님과 졸업생, 재학생들과 반갑게 인사할 수 있으면 좋겠네요. 여의치 않은 분들은 온라인으로도 가능하니 꼭 참석해 주시고요. 그럼, 입시 설명회에서 만나도록 해요! 감사합니다.

A. Yes, that is correct. For the convenience of those applying to Chung-Ang University AITP, we plan to consolidate the existing two-stage selection process into a single day starting with this year's admissions, and to minimize waiting times on the day of the selection process.
