Interview with Professor Seojin Park, Korean-English Major, AITP

Q1. 간단한 자기소개 부탁드려요.

A. 안녕하세요. 한영과 14기 박서진입니다. 저는 졸업 후 현재 프리랜서로 통역, 국제행사 진행, 영어방송 등 다양한 일을 하고 있으며, 이번 학기부터는 모교인 중앙대에서 수업을 진행하며 의미있는 시간을 보내고 있습니다.

Q1. Could you please briefly introduce yourself?

A. Hello, my name is Seojin Park, a member of the 14th cohort of the Korean-English AITP. After graduating, I have been working as a freelancer in various fields such as interpreting, hosting international events, and English-language broadcasting. This semester, I also began teaching at my alma mater, Chung-Ang University, which has been a truly meaningful experience.

Q2. 학부 전공은 예술쪽이라고 들었어요. 통번역을 선택하게 된 계기가 궁금해요.

A. 네. 저는 연기를 전공했습니다. 학부 때 배우로 활동을 하기는 했지만 매일 하던 것은 아닌지라 아르바이트를 했었어요. 당시 친구로부터 VIP 의전통역 일을 소개받아 처음 MICE 업계를 접하게 됐습니다. 막연히 저 부스는(동시통역 부스) 뭘까? 하던 그 시기에 한번의 통역기회가 여러 기회로 확장되어 여러 분야에 있는 분들을 만날 수 있었는데요. 그때 전문적으로 통역을 공부해보면 좋을 것 같다는 한 외교인사의 추천이 있었고 그게 첫 시작이 되었습니다.  연기를 전공하기는 했지만 평소 무언가 내가 할 수 있는 공부를 해보고 싶다는 생각이 강했던지라 처음 시작한 통역 공부가 무척 재밌었던 기억이 나요!

Q2. We heard you majored in the arts during your undergraduate studies. What led you to pursue interpreting and translation?

A. Yes, that’s right. I majored in acting. Although I did perform as an actor during college, it wasn’t something I did every day, so I also worked part-time jobs. At that time, a friend introduced me to a VIP liaison interpreting assignment, which was my first encounter with the MICE industry. I used to wonder, What exactly happens inside those booths (the simultaneous interpretation booths)?

That first interpreting experience led to more opportunities, allowing me to meet people from many different fields. It was actually a diplomat I met back then who suggested I study interpreting professionally—and that became the spark.

Even though my major was in acting, I had always wanted to challenge myself academically. So when I started studying interpreting, I found it incredibly fun and engaging. That’s how it all began!

Q3. 중앙대를 선택하신 특별한 이유가 있었나요?

A. 저는 중고등학교도 예술계를 졸업했고 학부에서 실기 위주의 수업이 주를 이루다 보니 일반 인문계열을 전공한 학우들보다 배경지식이 많이 부족했습니다. 누구는 상식이라 할 수 있는 것들도 저는 이해하기 위해서 초기 개념부터 다시 공부해야 했고요. 통역은 언어적 능력만큼이나 다양한 분야에 대한 배경지식이 중요하잖아요. 그래서 통역을 배우는 동시에 국제학 수업을 함께 들을 수 있는 중앙대가 저에겐 최고의 선택이라 생각했어요!

Q3. Was there a special reason why you chose Chung-Ang University?

A. I went to an arts-focused middle and high school, and even in college, most of my coursework was centered on practical training. As a result, I lacked the broad academic background that many of my peers from liberal arts or humanities majors had. There were things that others might consider general knowledge, which I had to go back and study from the very basics just to understand.

In interpreting, background knowledge across a wide range of fields is just as important as language skills. That’s why I felt Chung-Ang, where I could study international studies alongside interpreting, was the perfect choice for me—and it truly has been.

Q4. 이번 학기부터 중앙대학교에서 강의를 맡게 되셨다고 들었어요. 어떤 과목을 맡으셨고, 어떤 내용을 중심으로 수업을 진행하고 계신가요?

A. 좋은 기회로 학교에서 T&P Communication 이라는 과목을 맡게 되었습니다. 이 수업은 통번역에만 집중하는 것이 아닌 졸업 후 학생들이 서게 될 국제무대에서 효과적이고 전문적인 커뮤니케이션을 할 수 있게 준비하는 수업이에요. 통번역대학원을 나왔다고 모두가 통역만! 번역만! 하시지는 않는 것 같아요. 때로는 언어 전문가로서 강의를 하기도 하고, IR 피칭을 대신하거나, 국제행사의 사회자 역할을 하기도 하죠. 실제 필드에서 접하게 될 다양한 상황에 전문적으로 대처할 수 있게 비즈니스 매너부터 실제 무대 롤플레잉 등 전문 커뮤니케이터로서 알고 있으면 좋을 내용들을 중점적으로 다루고 있습니다.

Q4. We heard you recently started teaching at Chung-Ang University. What course are you teaching, and what are its main focuses?

A. I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to teach a course called T&P Communication this semester. This class doesn’t focus solely on interpreting and translation; rather, it’s designed to prepare students to communicate effectively and professionally on the international stage after graduation.

Not everyone who graduates from an interpretation and translation program becomes only an interpreter or translator. Sometimes they step into roles as language experts who give lectures, deliver investor relations pitches, or serve as MCs at international events.

So in this course, we concentrate on the kinds of skills and knowledge that will help them handle a wide range of real-world scenarios with professionalism. This includes everything from business etiquette to on-stage role-playing exercises. My goal is to equip them with the tools they need to thrive as competent communicators in any professional context.

Q5. 모교에서 강의를 하게 되신 소감이 남다르실 것 같아요. 직접 강단에 서셨을 때 어떤 감정이 드셨나요?

A. 졸업하고 학교를 오랜만에 가게 됐어요. 오랜만임에도 학교 다니던게 어제처럼 느껴지더라고요!  멋진 통역사가 되어야지 하는 꿈을 꾸며 공부하던 예전이 떠올라 스스로 웃기기도 감격스럽기도 했습니다.

Q5. It must feel quite special to be teaching at your alma mater. How did it feel to stand at the lectern yourself?

A. It had been quite some time since I last set foot on campus after graduating. Yet the moment I returned, it felt as if my student days were just yesterday. Memories of studying with the dream of becoming a distinguished interpreter flooded back, and I found myself smiling, both amused and deeply moved.

Q6. 중앙대 통번역대학원만의 강점은 뭐라고 생각하세요?

A. 프리랜서로 일하다 보면 정말 다양한 주제를 접하게 됩니다. 대학원 시절, 다른 통번역대학원과 달리 국제학 강의를 함께 들을 수 있었는데, 이 점이 큰 강점이라 생각합니다. 특히 핀테크나 국제 교류 관련 수업은 실제 통역 실무에서도 많은 도움이 되었어요. 당시엔 과제와 시험이 벅차게 느껴졌지만, 지금 돌아보면 다양한 국가 정책을 깊이 있게 들여다볼 수 있었던 그 시간이 제게 든든한 배경지식이 되어 주었구나 싶습니다.

Q6. What do you think is Chung-Ang University’s greatest strength?

A. As a freelancer, I encounter an incredibly wide range of topics in my work. Looking back, one of Chung-Ang’s greatest strengths is that, unlike some other interpretation and translation graduate programs, it offers international studies courses alongside interpreting training.

Classes on subjects like fintech and international exchange, in particular, have been tremendously helpful in my actual interpreting assignments. Although at the time the coursework and exams felt overwhelming, I now realize how those opportunities to explore various national policies in depth became a solid foundation of knowledge that continues to support me in my professional life.

Q7. 통번역사를 꿈꾸는 후배들에게 해주고 싶은 조언이 있다면요?

A. 너무 진부하게 들릴 수도 있지만, 정말 후회 없이 꾸준히 하다 보면 ‘어, 진짜 되네?’ 싶은 순간이 찾아오더라고요. 저도 1학년 2학기 때는 심리적 압박이 너무 커서 말 한마디도 제대로 못 하고 수업 도중에 울면서 교실을 나간 적도 있었어요. 그 시기를 지나 2학년이 되면서는 ‘매일 몇 시간씩은 아니더라도 하루에 30분만은 꼭 하자’고 다짐했어요. 주말이든, 여행 중이든, 친구들과 파티하는 밤이든 무조건 지키려 했고, 잠자기 전 지문을 외우고 필사하며 하루를 마무리했죠.그렇게 하다 보니 어느 순간 ‘언제 이렇게 지문들을 통역할 수 있게 된 거지?’ 싶은 날이 오더라고요. 제 방법이 정답이라고 할 수는 없지만, 한 가지 확실한 건 ‘꾸준히 하면 된다’는 거예요. 정답은 없지만, 자신만의 방식으로 노력하다 보면 어느새 많이 성장한 자신을 발견할 수 있을 거라고 생각합니다!

Q7. Do you have any advice for juniors who aspire to become interpreters?

This might sound a bit cliché, but I’ve truly found that if you keep at it consistently—without regrets—there will come a moment when you suddenly think, “Wow, I can actually do this!” During the second semester of my first year, the psychological pressure was so intense that there was a day I couldn’t get a single word out. I even burst into tears and walked out of the classroom in the middle of class. But by the time I became a second-year student, I made a promise to myself: Even if it’s not for hours every day, I’ll at least study for 30 minutes no matter what. Whether it was the weekend, while traveling, or even after a night out partying with friends, I made sure to keep that promise. I often ended my days memorizing and copying passages by hand before going to sleep. Before I knew it, there came a day when I thought, “When did I become able to interpret these texts like this?” I can’t say my way is the absolute answer. But one thing I know for sure is that steady effort really does pay off. There’s no single right path, but if you keep working at it in your own way, you’ll one day discover just how far you’ve come.
