The Discursive Politics of Gender Equality in South Korea

2025년 5월 13일, 중앙대학교 국제대학원에서는 서울대학교 인권센터 김올튼 박사를 초청하여 ‘The Discursive Politics of Gender Equality in South Korea’ 를 주제로 특강을 진행했다. 이번 강연은 5·18 광주 민주화운동을 젠더의 관점에서 새롭게 해석하며, 민주주의와 성평등에 대해 함께 생각해보는 기회를 제공하였다.

김올튼 박사는 1980년 5월 광주에서 일어난 민주화운동 속에 다양한 여성들이 적극적으로 참여했음에도 불구하고, 그동안의 역사에서는 이들의 역할이 충분히 조명되지 않았다는 점과 여러 방식으로 운동에 기여했다는 사실을 구체적인 사례를 통해 설명했다.

이어 그는 민주화 이후 시행된 보상과 진상규명 과정에서도 여성의 경험이 배제된 현실을 언급하며, 모두의 목소리가 반영되는 민주주의를 위해 ‘변화를 만드는 정의(transformative justice)’가 필요하다고 강조했다. 김올튼 박사는 “과거를 돌아보는 것은 현재를 더 나은 방향으로 바꾸기 위한 출발점”이라며, 성별에 관계없이 모두가 평등하게 존중받는 사회를 위한 관심과 노력을 당부했다.

이번 특강은 민주주의와 젠더 문제를 함께 고민해볼 수 있는 의미 있는 시간으로, 국제대학원 학생들에게 깊은 인상을 남겼다.

On May 13, 2025, GSIS hosted a special lecture by Mr. Kim Ol Teun at the Human Rights Center of Seoul National University. The lecture, titled "The Discursive Politics of Gender Equality in South Korea," offered an inspiring perspective on the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising, encouraging students to reflect on the intersection of democracy and gender equality.

Mr. Kim emphasized that, although many women actively participated in the 1980 democratic movement in Gwangju, their roles have not been sufficiently highlighted in historical narratives. He illustrated how women from various backgrounds—such as workers, students, and housewives—contributed to the movement in significant ways through concrete examples.

He further pointed out that women's experiences were often excluded from the official processes of truth-seeking and compensation that followed democratization. To address this imbalance, Mr. Kim stressed the importance of "transformative justice," a concept that seeks to create a democracy where everyone's voices are equally heard. “Looking back on the past is a starting point for creating a better present,” he stated, urging continued efforts to build a society where all individuals are equally respected, regardless of gender.

This lecture provided an important opportunity for students to critically examine issues of democracy and gender, leaving a lasting impression on attendees.
