Democracy and Green Politics:

Green Politics in Response to Climate Crisis and Far-Right

On April 8, the GSIS at Chung-Ang University hosted a special lecture titled "Democracy and Green Politics: Green Politics in Response to the Climate Crisis and the Far-Right" by Eojin Son, Co-President of the Green Politics Institute Korea.

중앙대학교 국제대학원은 지난 4월 8일, 녹색정치연구소 손어진 공동대표를 초청하여 “민주주의와 녹색정치: 기후위기와 극우주의를 대응하는 녹색정치" ”라는 주제로 특강을 개최하였다.

In her lecture, Ms. Eojin Son, discussed the evolving state of democracy and the escalating climate crisis—issues that are drawing increasing global attention. She identified declining civic engagement, rising social polarization, and the proliferation of misinformation as key challenges to democratic systems. Ms. Son further emphasized that the climate crisis should not be seen merely as an environmental concern, but as a structural and political issue that requires bold and systemic responses.

이번 특강에서 손어진 대표는 최근 전 세계적으로 논의되고 있는 민주주의의 변화와 기후위기의 심화, 그리고 이에 대한 대안으로서 녹색정치의 가능성에 대해 설명하였다. 그는 민주주의가 직면한 주요 과제로 시민 참여의 위축, 사회적 양극화, 정보 왜곡 문제 등을 언급하며, 기후 위기 문제 역시 단순한 환경 이슈를 넘어 구조적이고 정치적인 대응이 필요한 시대적 과제임을 강조하였다.

During the lecture, Ms. Son explained that green politics is not limited to environmental issues, but represents a broader political philosophy that encompasses sustainability, social justice, and participatory democracy. She emphasized that such an approach can play a significant role in addressing the climate crisis while also contributing to the revitalization of the international community.

녹색정치가 단순한 환경 의제를 넘어 지속 가능성, 사회적 정의, 시민 중심의 참여민주주의를 포괄하는 정치 철학임을 설명하며, 이러한 접근이 국제사회의 회복과 기후위기 대응에 모두 기여할 수 있다는 점을 학생들에게 설명했다.

Ms. Son also introduced the development of green politics, its potential for institutionalization, and the importance of expanding community-based participation through examples from both Korea and other countries. The lecture concluded with a Q&A session with students.

또한 한국과 해외 여러 나라의 사례를 통해 녹색정치의 발전 과정과 제도화의 가능성, 그리고 지역 기반 참여 확대의 중요성을 소개하였으며, 강연 후에는 학생들과의 질의응답 시간으로 마무리되었다.
