GSIS Students Conduct Plogging Activity Around Campus

국제대학원 학생들 캠퍼스 주변 플로깅 진행

On April 1st, students from Chung-Ang University’s Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) participated in a meaningful plogging activity in collaboration with the civic environmental organization WIPERTH as part of their course Cultural Diversity and Global Citizenship.

WIPERTH, short for “Wiping Earth,” emphasizes the value of plogging—picking up litter while jogging—as a way of “wiping the Earth clean.” Mr. Seung-Yong Hwang, the organization’s CEO, joined GSIS students for the second consecutive year and shared the importance of plogging in everyday life as well as WIPERTH’s mission.

지난 4월 1일, 중앙대학교 국제대학원 학생들은 ‘Cultural Diversity and Global Citizenship(문화다양성과 세계시민성)’ 수업의 일환으로 시민환경단체 WIPERTH(와이퍼스)와 함께 플로깅을 진행하며 뜻깊은 시간을 보냈다.

WIPERTH는 ‘Wiping Earth’의 줄임말로 ‘지구를 닦는다’는 의미를 통해 길거리의 쓰레기를 줍는 플로깅 활동의 가치를 강조하고 있다. 황승용 대표는 지난해에 이어 올해 두 번째로 국제대학원 학생들과 함께 플로깅을 진행하며 일상생활에서 플로깅의 중요성과 와이퍼스의 목표에 대해 설명했다.

Before the activity began, Mr. Hwang gave a brief lecture highlighting common types of litter found on the streets—such as cigarette butts, single-use plastic cups, and remnants of fireworks—stressing the importance of raising environmental awareness.

The activity took place both on campus and in nearby areas. Students, dressed in WIPERTH uniforms and equipped with essential tools like tongs and trash bags, formed teams and set out to collect litter. Despite the short duration, participants were able to directly experience the severity of environmental issues and reflect on more sustainable ways of living.

플로깅 시작 전 황승용 대표는 강연을 통해 길에서 발견되는 대표적인 쓰레기들—예를 들어 담배꽁초, 일회용 플라스틱 컵, 폭죽 잔여물 등—에 대해 소개하며 환경 인식 제고의 중요성을 강조했다.

이번 활동은 캠퍼스와 인근 지역에서 진행되었으며, 학생들은 와이퍼스 유니폼을 착용하고 집게, 쓰레기봉투 등 필수 도구를 갖추어 팀별로 플로깅에 나섰다. 짧은 활동 시간이었음에도 불구하고, 학생들은 현장 실천을 통해 환경 문제의 심각성을 체감하며 지속가능한 삶의 방식에 대해 고민해보는 기회를 가질 수 있었다.

This event served as a meaningful example of social responsibility jointly carried out by GSIS and WIPERTH. It demonstrated how small actions in daily life can shift community awareness and contribute positively toward a sustainable future.

이번 행사는 국제대학원과 WIPERTH가 함께 사회적 책임을 실천한 의미 있는 사례로, 일상의 작은 실천이 공동체의 인식을 변화시키고 지속 가능한 미래를 향한 긍정적인 영향을 줄 수 있음을 보여주었다.
