On Friday, September 20th, the Graduate School of International Studies held a special lecture titled "Expanding a Career from Interpreter to Finance Professional" in Room 703 of Building 301. The event was organized by Junho Lee from the Department of Translation and Interpretation, with Jason Eddy, a graduate student in the Korean-English translation program, serving as the moderator.

9월 20일(금), 국제대학원 리더스 포럼 특강이 "통역사에서 금융 전문가로의 커리어 확장"이라는 주제로 중앙대학교 301관 703호에서 개최되었다. 이번 특강은 이준호 전문통번역학과 한·영 전공 교수의 주관으로 진행되었으며, 제이슨 에디 전문통번역학과 한·영 전공 원우가 사회를 맡았다.

The guest speaker, Seung-rak Choi, began his career as a full-time interpreter at Standard Chartered Bank after graduating from the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation. He later transitioned into the finance industry, working in Hong Kong and Singapore, and is now the Chief Customer Officer (CCO) at Toss Bank. The talk touched on the strengths interpreters have, how to enter the finance industry, and ended with a Q&A session on careers in both fields.

최승락 연사는 통번역 대학원을 졸업한 후 스탠다드차타드 은행에서 상근 통역사로 근무하였으며, 이후 홍콩과 싱가포르에서 금융 전문가로 변신하여 현재 토스뱅크에서 CCO(소비자 담당 최고책임자)로 활동하고 있다. 이번 특강은 ▲통역사의 강점 ▲금융업계 전환 방법 ▲통역 및 금융업계 직무에 관한 질문 순으로 진행되었다.

He pointed out that translation and interpretation training helps build key communication skills like listening, reading, speaking, and writing. These skills, especially active listening and summarization, can be a big help when moving into different careers.

통번역 교육을 통해 계발할 수 있는 강점으로는 듣기, 읽기, 말하기, 쓰기 능력이 강조되었다. 특히, 최승락 CCO는 경청과 요약 등 고급 커뮤니케이션 기술이 다른 직종으로의 전환 시 많은 도움이 된다고 설명했다.

He also shared his personal experience on how he took his first steps into the finance industry, stressing the need for a bold, problem-solving attitude when taking on new roles or changing careers, instead of letting fear hold you back. Additionally, he introduced fintech initiatives launched by Toss Bank, offering valuable insights to help translation and interpretation students broaden their understanding of finance.

또한 그는 금융업계에 어떻게 첫발을 내디딜 수 있었는지 자신의 경험을 공유하며, 다른 업무를 맡거나 타업종으로 전환할 때 두려움을 갖지 않고 문제 해결을 위한 담대한 태도가 필요하다고 강조했다. 더불어 토스뱅크에서 시도한 핀테크 사례를 소개하여 통번역 전공자들이 금융권에 대한 지식을 확장하는 데도 도움을 주었다.

During the Q&A session, questions came up about both the interpretation and finance industries. When asked about the most effective way to improve interpretation skills, the speaker recommended practicing to expand short-term memory, which is crucial for simultaneous interpretation. Another question was about how common it is for interpreters to switch to the financial industry. He noted that many interpreters he knows are actively working in the field and that a career in interpreting helps develop a big-picture view.

질의응답 시간에는 통역 및 금융업계에 관한 질문이 이어졌다. 통역 공부를 할 때 실력 향상에 가장 도움이 된 공부법을 묻는 질문에 연사는 동시통역 단기 메모리를 늘리는 스터디를 추천했다. 통역사에서 금융업계로 전환하여 실무에 직접 참여하는 사례가 많은지에 대한 질문에는, 주변에 실무에 참여하는 통역사가 많으며, 통역사로서의 커리어가 거시적 안목을 확보하는 데 큰 도움이 된다고 답했다.

Second-year students from the Translation and Interpretation Department, specializing in Korean-English, Korean-Chinese, and Korean-Russian, supported the lecture by providing simultaneous interpretation in their respective fields of study.

한편, 이번 특강은 전문통번역학과 한·영 한·중 한·러 2학년 재학생이 전공언어로 동시통역을 지원했다.
